Each winter, the Winterhaven Festival of Lights transforms Tucson into a glowing celebration of community spirit. For years, Cox employees — along with their signature bucket trucks — have been among the volunteers stringing lights through the trees and walkways, turning this neighborhood tradition into something truly magical. But while those dazzling displays shine for a few weeks, the impact on both employees and employers can last all year.
Like many Tucson businesses, Cox recognizes that volunteerism and charitable giving shouldn’t be limited to a single season. Supporting the community is more than a gesture of goodwill; it’s a smart investment in people and workplace culture. Companies that prioritize philanthropy often experience tangible benefits, including improved employee retention, boosted morale and a stronger employer brand that draws top-tier talent. When employees feel appreciated and connected to their community, they’re more likely to stay loyal, think creatively and champion their organization.
According to Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, nearly nine in ten Gen Z employees (89%) and more than nine in ten millennials (92%) say that a strong sense of purpose is essential to their job satisfaction and well-being. They don’t just want a paycheck; they want to make an impact. A broader Deloitte study on employee volunteerism found that when companies provide ways to give back, employees report greater fulfillment and purpose, improved morale and teamwork and stronger pride in their employer.
Businesses that embrace volunteerism often see real returns like higher retention, stronger morale, and a reputation that attracts top talent. Employees who feel valued and connected to their community are more likely to stay, innovate, and advocate for their organization. For companies competing for elite candidates in Tucson’s labor market, that’s no small advantage.
Giving financially is also a vital part of meaningful community support. At Cox, not only do we offer paid volunteer time and ongoing service opportunities, but we also provide direct financial contributions to nonprofits and community organizations. I am particularly proud of Cox Charities, our employee-led campaign, which complements the company’s giving with staff raising funds and helping select grant recipients. This year, in the campaign’s 29th year, Cox Charities awarded $80,000 to local Southern Arizona organizations, showcasing the impact of employee-driven philanthropy alongside corporate support.
Just as volunteerism builds employee engagement, charitable giving also strengthens workplace culture and employee satisfaction. According to the 2025 CECP Giving in Numbers Survey, companies that prioritize corporate giving see a 13% increase in employee engagement compared to those that don’t. Employees increasingly expect their employers to support causes they care about, and when they do, it leads to greater loyalty, teamwork, and overall well-being.
This time of year, giving back is at the forefront for many businesses — but community support shouldn’t be limited to a seasonal gesture. As Tucson continues to grow as a hub for innovation, education and small business, local employers have an opportunity to build cultures rooted in connection and contribution. Investing in the community should be a year-round business strategy that fuels purpose, pride and productivity.
