TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Hundreds of Sunnyside High School students walked out of class Tuesday afternoon to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement as part of what they called the “Melt ICE Walkout.”
The demonstration began shortly after 1 p.m., with students gathering on the school’s football field. Students told News 4 Tucson they chose that time because the school day was nearly over and traffic along nearby roads was heavy—giving their message more visibility. Drivers passing by responded with honks of support.
Some students also protested outside campus. One student said her parent picked her up early so she could join the demonstration beyond school grounds.
“We’re representing that ICE—it’s not right what they’re doing, just taking kids and using it against families,” Sunnyside High student Kassiey Ferreyra said.
Parents were also present and supportive. Jose Magaña, whose two children attend Sunnyside High, said he was proud to see them involved.
“Our kids are young, they don’t like seeing what they’re doing to our people,” Magaña said. “We saw our kids making flyers over the weekend. It was an amazing feeling that they care for our community.”
In a statement, the Sunnyside Unified School District said:
“Sunnyside Unified School District respects student voice and civic engagement while remaining committed to providing safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for all students.
As students returned to campus today (Tuesday) following the MLK holiday, we are aware that some students may choose to participate in walkouts related to national conversations around immigration.
Our focus is on student safety and continuity of learning. Schools will remain open, instruction will continue, and we will ensure campuses remain safe and orderly.
Sunnyside Unified School District remains committed to supporting students and families regardless of immigration status and ensuring our schools are places of belonging and opportunity for every child.”
The walkout lasted no more than 20 minutes, and no incidents were reported.
