Tucson braces for freeze as city crews work to keep roads safe | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Southern Arizona drivers may encounter freezing temperatures tonight into Saturday morning, prompting precautionary measures by the City of Tucson to prevent dangerous road conditions.

Crews were busy preparing bridge decks with magnesium chloride Friday evening, a substance that lowers the freezing temperature of water to prevent ice formation. The process began on Tucson’s west side at the Cushing Street Bridge, with a truck making several passes before moving on to the next bridge deck.

The work left behind dark lines on the road and signs warning of “Wet Road Ahead.” The substance lasts roughly 10 days, according to city officials. Ice is an uncommon challenge for Tucson drivers.

“Here, no experience, and I bet nobody else does. Better to get it done before . . . better safe than sorry,” River Estes, a Tucson driver, said.

The City of Tucson will monitor more than 50 bridge decks through the night and into Saturday morning depending on temperatures. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and be mindful of workers on the roads.
