15-year-old charged with murder after allegedly hijacking Uber driver’s car, killing him

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A 15-year-old is being charged with murder after police found the body of an Uber driver in the road in Lawrenceville.

On Jan. 1, around 5:20 a.m., officers with the Lawrenceville Police Department responded to the 600 block of Groveland Parkway regarding a person down. 

When they arrived, they found a man dead who suffered at least one gunshot wound.

Officers obtained Ring doorbell video footage from a nearby camera showing a black SUV stopping in the road, dropping off the victim, and leaving the area. 

According to police, it was discovered that the black SUV belonged to the victim through the use of investigative technology, and it was later determined that the victim, a 58-year-old Uber driver, was the victim of a carjacking, where he was later shot and killed.

Later that day, the victim’s SUV was tracked down at a residence on Hardwood Circle in Lilburn. Police arrested a 15-year-old male found at the location.

The teenage suspect is being charged as an adult with murder. 

The name of the victim has not been released as police are working to notify next of kin, and due to the suspect’s age, his identity was not revealed.

11Alive reached out to Uber for comment, and a spokesperson for the company stated, “We’re saddened by this devastating loss, and our condolences go out to the driver’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We’ve been in contact with the Lawrence Police Department to help support their investigation.”
