Police identify woman killed in shooting at Phoenix home

PHOENIX — A woman has died following a shooting in Phoenix Wednesday night.

Officers were called to the area of 12th Street and Mountain View Road around 7:10 p.m. for a person who had possibly been shot, according to Phoenix police. 

When officers arrived on scene, they found Katherine Cervantez, 39, suffering from a gunshot wound. 

Police identified the victim’s boyfriend, Victor Giron, as the suspect in the shooting.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

According to court documents, the victim and the suspect had been dating for two weeks.

The two had gone to the home of a friend of the victim the day before the shooting.

Court documents said the victim told her friend that during the time the two had been dating, they had been having frequent fights. The victim also told her friend that she had been assaulted by the suspect. The friend also noticed that the suspect had a gun, court documents said.

The friend said when they woke up the next morning, the victim and suspect were no longer in the home. They came back to the home later in the day at around 2 p.m. They got into a fight and were told by the friend that they needed to leave the home, court documents said.

Around an hour later, the suspect again came to the home and asked the victim’s friend for help.

The suspect told the friend he may have shot the victim and needed the friend’s help. The friend refused to go with the suspect unless he turned over the gun. He also said the victim had threatened him with a knife.

The victim was found in the back seat of a car. She had been shot, court documents said.

The victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Giron is facing charges of murder, second-degree, and aggravated assault, the court documents said.
