Tucson kids abducted in 2018 officially adopted | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – In an emotional event exclusive to News 4 Tucson, the Ramirez family is celebrating a long-awaited union. Luis and Kahmila Ramirez are officially home with their aunt and uncle, Erika and David Ramirez, who became their legal parents.

In a touching courtroom scene on the southside, a judge declared the aunt and uncle as the official parents of the children they have cared for over the years.

Luis Ramirez, now 13 years old, expressed his excitement for the future.

“It’s strong and exciting and blessing,” Luis said.

The courtroom was filled with friends, family, and relatives, all there to witness the moment Erika and David Ramirez had been working towards for years.

“We’re so happy to be here,” Erika Ramirez said.

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotion,” she added. “It’s been challenging, difficult, but here we are and it’s amazing.”

For the family, the adoption is more than just a legal formality.

“Honestly it’s just a document – these children have always been mine,” Erika said.

Despite past doubts, the family is grateful to share this special time with Luis and Kahmila, especially with Christmas approaching.

“We’re just thankful this season to be able to share it with Luis and Kahmila,” Erika said.

While Kahmila is thrilled, she had one small complaint about the day.

“It’s good – except the early morning mom!” Kahmila said.

Erika Ramirez had a message of gratitude for everyone involved.

“I just want to say thank you,” she said.

Luis also had a heartfelt message to share.

“Thank you everyone for looking for me and I hope you have a great Christmas,” Luis said.

The Ramirez family is looking forward to what promises to be a special and merry Christmas, marking the end of a long journey.
