TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Attorney General Mayes has announced a sentencing regarding a drug dealer involved in selling fruit-flavored cocaine. Mayes has issued a consumer alert about this dangerous new trend in the illegal drug market.
In Pima County, Jaden Alfredo Covarrubias was involved in soliciting the possession of around 1.55 pounds of flavored cocaine for sale on July 17, according to a press release. He reportedly offered varieties like coconut, strawberry and banana on platforms such as WhatsApp.
Covarrubias has been sentenced to 1.75 years in prison, and must pay $4,500 to the State Anti-Racketeering Revolving Fund and $300 for investigative costs to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Covarrubias was sentenced on Nov. 24.
“My office will continue to hold accountable those illegally trafficking and selling drugs in our communities,” Mayes said.
A consumer alert has been issued regarding flavored cocaine, which is marketed in flavors like pina colada and strawberry, appealing to women and young users, according to a press release. Mayes warns that these drugs could be laced with deadly fentanyl.
“Drugs like cocaine are often laced with deadly fentanyl and we want everyone to be aware of it,” Mayes said.
The Arizona Attorney General’s Office is cautioning the public against the dangers of these drugs, emphasizing the lethal risk of fentanyl contamination.
“We want everyone to stay safe and avoid the harms that come from using illegal drugs,” Mayes added.
The indictment can be read online.
