TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A special edition of the high school Brandon Bean Soccer Tournament wrapped up at Salpointe Catholic High School Friday night. Former Salpointe girls soccer coach Kelly Pierce, who passed away this summer at the age of 44, is being remembered with the girls portion of the tournament now named in her honor.
Pierce’s family watched intently as Salpointe lost to Buena in a penalty kick shootout. Pierce’s loved ones stood at midfield ater the title game, presenting the tournament trophy to Buena.
Pierce’s mother, Donna, shared her feelings about the now annual tribute to her daughter.
“My emotions are so bittersweet. I miss her so much. She was my best friend. I was at every one of her games, I even went on the bus with her to away games. This is just such a great tribute to her, I’m so proud of her,” Donna Pierce said.
Kelly Pierce died from cardiac arrest in August. During her eight years as coach, she led the Salpointe girls team to six 4A state titles. As a player, she won two state titles in 1998 and 1999.
Donna Pierce expressed how much her daughter loved being part of Salpointe, both as a player and a coach. She emphasized Kelly’s dedication to ensuring equality for girls in sports.
