The video details an officer’s initial traffic stop of the man previously identified as Roger Nunez.
During the stop, the video shows Nunez pulling out his gun from the glove compartment of his white Tesla, allegedly escalating the situation, and the officer can be heard saying, “Drop the Gun.”
The video shows Nunez getting out of his car, walking away with the gun in his hand. The incident turned into an armed confrontation involving multiple officers.
During the incident, Nunez can be seen on the witness video provided to AJPD firing his weapon at officers. One of those bullets reportedly struck Officer Facio in the head, putting him in critical condition. Facio died six days later at a Mesa-area hospital.
The video shows Nunez not complying with officers’ commands, leading one AJPD officer to shoot him in the torso.
Nunez was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.
After his treatment, Nunez was booked in the Pinal County Jail. He faces several charges including one count of first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement and two counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon. He is being held on a $2 million cash-only bond, police said.
Multiple Valley and Pinal County offices helped in this investigation. The Mesa Police Department investigated the shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, a regional collaborative of police departments from Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Queen Creek, Scottsdale and Tempe.
Police said the Pinal County Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Committee reviewed all reports and recordings and found no evidence that would lead to any officers involved in the incident being charged.
