Police said a licence plate reader alerted officers to a vehicle that was reported stolen, driving near Dysart Road and Interstate 10.
Officers found the vehicle as it pulled into a parking lot near the southwest corner of Dysart Road and Van Buren Street.
Police said the shooting happened when the man driving the vehicle was approached by officers.
“As officers approached, the driver exited the vehicle and began running northbound,” police said. “Officers pursued on foot. During the chase, the suspect entered the roadway and produced a handgun. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
After the man was shot, police said officers attempted life-saving measures on the man.
“Three officers discharged their weapons, stopping the threat,” police said. “The suspect was immediately detained, and officers provided medical aid.”
The man died at the scene.
“A handgun was located at the scene,” police said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The shooting is being investigated by the West Valley Incident Response Team (West VIRT).
This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
