Fire and water restrictions reduced on Grand Canyon due to better conditions | Arizona News

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Grand Canyon National Park is easing both fire and water restrictions, due to improved water storage and system reliability.

On Oct. 17, the park shifted from Stage 2 to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions and reduced water restrictions from Stage 3 to Stage 2 on the South Rim. This change is a result of the recovery of portable water storage tanks and repairs to the water delivery system at Havasupai Gardens, according to a news release.

Due to cooler temperatures, sufficient water resources and recent precipitation, the Stage 2 fire restrictions are lifted. Stage 1 fire restrictions require campfires be within designated fire rings at maintained campgrounds. Open fires below the rim remain prohibited, but gas stoves are allowed in cleared areas. River users should also follow the Colorado River permit fire conditions and stipulations.

Visitors are urged to follow fire safety practices such as checking restrictions, using portable stoves on stable surfaces, not parking or driving on dry vegetation, and smoking only on paved areas.

For water conservation, the park remains in Stage 2 Water Restrictions. Visitors and residents are encouraged to conserve water by reporting leaks, running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines, taking shorter showers, and reducing toilet flushing.

Mather Campground’s Camper Services and restrooms are open, with concessioners and park partners adhering to water-reduction protocols.

Hikers should carry enough water or have treatment methods, as backcountry water availability may vary, according to a news release.

For updates, visit the National Park Service’s Critical Backcountry Updates webpage. Park staff will continue to monitor conditions.
