Lil Jon to perform at this year’s Navajo Nation Fair

The event draws 100,000 visitors each year to Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The Navajo Nation is preparing to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for its biggest event of the year: the 77th annual Navajo Nation Fair.

Recognized as one of the largest American Indian fairs in North America, the event draws about 100,000 visitors each year to Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation. Carnival rides are already being set up, but organizers say the fair is about much more than games and lights.

It’s a celebration of tradition, competition, and food. One of the most popular dishes on the fairgrounds is steamed corn stew and fry bread. There are also classic fair staples such as giant turkey legs, funnel cake, and curly fries.

The week is filled with activities for all ages. Wednesday is Kids’ Day and will feature a “baby contest.” Wednesday is also Good Medicine Youth Day, where 2,000 skateboards and wellness items will be distributed to local kids and families

Thursday is Elder Fest, and Friday includes a fry bread contest that organizers say comes with serious bragging rights across Navajoland. Oh, and Lil Jon will take the stage Friday at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday will feature the annual parade and powwow, along with the crowning of Miss Navajo. Rodeo championships wrap up the fair on Sunday, a highlight for many families.

“I have kids that are participating, my husband as well, so it’s a family affair, and everybody is family here. It’s a wonderful day,” said Lynna Begay.

The Navajo Nation is the largest reservation in the United States, spanning an area nearly three times the size of Maricopa County. The fair gives people from all corners of the reservation a chance to reconnect.

The fair runs Tuesday through Sunday in Window Rock.
