US 60 reopens near Gilbert Road after deadly crash involving tanker truck


MESA, AZ — One person is dead after a crash along US 60 in Mesa early Tuesday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 2:25 a.m. when a tanker truck was rear-ended by a passenger car.

The truck was able to pull to the shoulder, but the passenger car was disabled in the middle of the roadway and was struck by two more vehicles.

The driver of the passenger car was taken to a hospital and later died.

One other minor injury was reported.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Gilbert Road for several hours, leading to a lengthy backup in the area.

The freeway reopened traffic around 7:40 a.m.
