Riding through tradition: KOLI Equestrian’s authentic Arizona experience | Featured Stories

Just a short drive from Phoenix, KOLI Equestrian Center in the Gila River Indian Community offers a chance to trade city streets for desert trails. Since 2002, the center has been welcoming locals and visitors alike to explore the wide-open landscape on horseback. 

“We specialize in providing a unique western-style horseback riding experience enriched with Native American culture and tradition,” said Chuck Pablo, the owner. “Many of our guides are local tribal members who share their knowledge of the land, its history and its people, creating a truly authentic experience.”

Unlike typical trail rides, there isn’t a strict head-to-tail format. Guests are welcome to ride side by side, allowing them to chat with their wranglers and fellow riders.

For Pablo, horses have always been a part of his life. “I got my first pony at age five. Throughout my life I’ve owned horses and gained hands-on experience helping my dad manage cattle,” he shared. “When the opportunity arose to turn my love of riding into a career, I knew it was the perfect fit.”

From wrangler to owner

When KOLI first opened its doors in 2002, Pablo began as one of the original wranglers. Two years later, he launched Chuck’s Trailriding Adventures, which has since been operating out of KOLI. What began with a handful of rented horses and equipment has grown into a thriving operation. Today, Pablo owns and cares for a herd of 50 horses, offering everything from guided trail rides to wagon ride experiences.

For more than two decades, he said his passion and vision has remained the same: to create horseback riding experiences where guests walk away not only with memories, but also with knowledge, confidence, and a deeper connection to the land, its culture, and its horses.

Horses and heritage

The horses at KOLI are more than working partners—they’re family. Some have been part of the herd for decades, including Martin, Pablo’s personal horse, who has been with him since day one and is now 27. Others were born at the equestrian center.

“Our well trained ‘dude horses,’ paired with the expertise of our experienced wranglers, provide guests with an authentic western adventure,” Pablo shared. “With a herd that includes a variety of breeds, such as mustangs, drafts and quarter horses, each horse brings its own unique personality and thrives in the desert terrain we call home.”

Whether you’re a first-timer or someone with riding experience, KOLI has options to fit your comfort level. Group rides are offered at set times, while private rides allow for a more personalized experience. For beginners, Horsemanship 101 provides a hands-on introduction to riding, available for both kids and adults. KOLI also hosts a variety of events from children’s birthday parties to corporate gatherings with team-building activities.

Specialty offerings include the Early Bird Ride and the Sunset Margarita Ride for guests 21 and older. Through the end of 2025, the ranch is also hosting Mornings on the Range, which pairs an early ride with a continental breakfast and cowboy games. At its core, KOLI Equestrian Center is more than just riding. 

“The optimal experience for our guests is about learning and connection. During our western trail rides, guests gain insight into the Gila River Indian Community, discover the deep role horses play in our culture and history, and build lasting confidence in their riding skills,” Pablo said. “Our goal is for every rider to leave with meaningful memories of their first adventure with us, inspiring them to return for another ride or group outing.”
