NOGALES, Ariz. (KVOA) – A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer discharged a weapon at the DeConcini Port of Entry on Tuesday, injuring one person and leading to a closure lasting several hours.
Traffic is flowing again at Nogales’ DeConcini Port of Entry after a shooting incident closed it for hours. The DHS and FBI are now on the case.
The port has since reopened after being closed for at least four hours. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m., according to CBP.
CBP confirmed that the officer involved was not hurt. The condition of the injured person is still unknown, and News 4 Tucson is actively seeking updates on their status.
During the closure, traffic was rerouted to the Mariposa Port of Entry. However, pedestrian traffic remained open, Nogales Police said.
Residents found the closure unusual. “It’s very rare. Normally it’s open this time of the day where you see a lot of people heading back to Mexico after working here in the U.S.,” a Nogales man said.
The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are now investigating the incident.
