Remains found near Tucson this month going back to family

Human remains found by a road crew earlier this month northwest of Tucson were properly buried on private land years ago, authorities said on Thursday.

On June 12, construction workers excavating for a road-widening project near West Twin Peaks and North Silverbell roads called 911 after finding the remains, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

An investigation revealed the remains were legally buried on private property in 1976.

“The grave was properly marked but over time the markings of the actual site were lost and the exact location was no longer discernible,” the release said. “No suspicious circumstances were found, and there is no indication of foul play.”

The remains will be turned over to family members, the release said.

The case has been closed.
