Prescott officer indicted by grand jury on manslaughter charge

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — A grand jury in Yavapai County indicted a Prescott police officer, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a news release that Prescott Police Officer Brian Sutton was indicted on one count of manslaughter. The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office submitted a criminal case to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in September of 2024 “due to a conflict of interest,” the news release states.

The indictment comes from an incident in June 2024. Sutton contacted a man named Daniel Leslie outside of Leslie’s home. Leslie, who was unarmed, moved in the direction of his home, and then Sutton fired his service weapon, the news release states.

Leslie was shot and died at the hospital.

The criminal investigation was handled by the Department of Public Safety, the news release states.
