BISBEE, Ariz. (KVOA) – The Letson Loft Hotel in downtown Bisbee is once again welcoming guests after a devastating fire forced it to close for nearly 13 months.
On February 14, 2024, a fire erupted just after 10 p.m. in the “Many Fine Things” antique store. The fire quickly spread to neighboring shops, including Bisbee Olive Oil and the Letson Loft Hotel.
“It was beyond shocking. We were full—it was Valentine’s night. Everyone had been wined and dined, settled into their rooms… Our first thought was: did everyone get out of the building?” said Marijane Relth, co-owner of the Letson Loft Hotel.
Firefighters from multiple agencies battled the flames throughout the night. Despite the narrow streets and old infrastructure, they successfully evacuated all guests safely. However, the damage was significant.
“Two days later, the west side of our building completely collapsed. It was made of mud and adobe. With all the water used to fight the fire, it just turned back into mud. That’s when we knew—it was going to be a long road,” said Tom Firth, co-owner of the hotel.
The cost to rebuild was $3.5 million, with the goal of reopening without compromising the hotel’s historic charm. Local contractors and builders played a crucial role in the restoration process.
“To be able to have local contractor, local subs that could really step up that help us get things back up in such a great timeframe,” Firth said.
The hotel underwent a complete transformation while preserving its 19th-century roots. In March, the Letson Loft Hotel officially reopened its doors.
“In this town, everybody steps up to help. We have such a lovely community here—everyone’s willing to lend a hand,” said Gretchen Bonaduce, a Bisbee business owner.
Relth expressed her excitement about welcoming guests again, stating, “We’re ready to greet people again. This is where your Bisbee adventure begins and ends. We’ve got a wonderful team here, ready to offer the best hospitality. All the feels are back.”
The Letson Loft Hotel is the only business damaged in the fire that has reopened.
