Woman walking on Tucson interstate shot, killed by trooper

A woman walking along the shoulder of Interstate 10 in Tucson Friday was shot and killed during an altercation with a state trooper, authorities say.

The confrontation happened about noon near the Park Avenue exit, the state Department of Public Safety said.

The unidentified woman was walking on the right shoulder of the interstate when a trooper stopped and got out of the patrol vehicle to make contact with her, the agency said in a news release.

“As the Trooper exited his vehicle to make contact with the pedestrian, an altercation occurred, which resulted in a trooper-involved shooting,” the agency said,

The trooper provided first aid to the woman who died later at the hospital.

The unidentified trooper was not injured.

An earlier story from the Star incorrectly identified the person shot as a man.
