Tucson honors Congressman Raúl Grijalva’s legacy and impact | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Today, hundreds gathered at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson to honor the life and legacy of Congressman Raúl Grijalva.

Grijalva passed away on March 13 due to complications from cancer treatments. A dedicated public servant, he represented Southern Arizona in Washington, D.C., for over two decades, tirelessly advocating for his community and the protection of public lands.

The community came together to pay tribute to Grijalva, remembering not only his political leadership but also his unwavering dedication to the people he served.

“Raúl was one of the most generous, wise, and principled people I ever met,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

“HIS conviction, his fight, his love for the people of Arizona and this country were the driving forces in his life,” said Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona.

Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Grijalva’s legacy. Born the son of a migrant farmworker, he became one of Arizona’s longest-serving members of Congress, holding office from 2002 until his passing.

“He was a man of the people, someone who truly understood the struggles of working families and students. That connection made him such a special leader,” said Gabriella Cázares-Kelly, Pima County Recorder.

For those who knew him, Grijalva’s impact extended far beyond politics.

“He led by example, inviting us to walk alongside him in his work. His legacy isn’t just in policy, it’s in the lasting change he made for this community,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero.

His family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.

“He lived a full life, and so many of you have shared stories that remind us not just of who he was, but of the moments you shared with him,” said Adelita Grijalva, his daughter.

Grijalva leaves behind his wife, three daughters, and five grandchildren. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on.
