Fort Lowell Shootout kicks off with festivities, parade, and excitement | News

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson’s largest youth sports event, the Fort Lowell Shootout, kicked off its 35th year Thursday evening with opening ceremonies and a parade at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The energy was palpable as more than 400 teams from across the country gathered to celebrate their love of soccer and prepare for an exciting weekend of competition.

Soccer players of all ages participated in the festivities, ranging from young beginners to experienced athletes who have honed their skills for years.

“What’s it like being out here today?” young soccer player Fiona Mustafa was asked. With a big smile, she replied, “Great!” When asked what she was looking forward to most, her answer was simple and heartfelt: “Playing soccer.”

Jude Pfaff, another player, echoed similar excitement: “Playing in the tournament, definitely!”

The Fort Lowell Shootout has become a cherished tradition for Tucson, growing in size and reputation each year. Teams from across the nation have made the trip to the Old Pueblo to compete, with some visiting for the first time.

“It’s our first year coming out,” said Matt Simonds, a coach from Albuquerque. “We’ve heard so much about this event from other teams back home, and we’re really excited. The atmosphere here is electric.”

The opening night was more than just soccer—it was a celebration of community and camaraderie. Families enjoyed a parade, live music, food trucks, games, and Olympic-style soccer challenges, such as juggling, accuracy drills, dribbling relays, and, of course, the signature shootout competition.

Beyond the excitement on the field, the tournament brings a significant economic boost to Tucson, generating over $4 million annually.

It also provides an opportunity to witness exceptional soccer skills across various age groups.

“The little ones are so cute playing bumblebee soccer,” said Sue Nesper, a field marshal for the event. “Then, as you move up to the U10 and U12 age groups, you start seeing these kids really developing their skills. By the time you get to the 16- and 17-year-old boys, the level of play is incredible.”

For many teams, their goals for the weekend are simple yet ambitious:

“To win the tournament,” said one young player. Another chimed in, “Blocking all the penalty kicks and winning every game.”

The tournament games begin tomorrow and will continue through Sunday, with all matches held at the Kino Sports Complex.
