Flags at half-staff Saturday to mark Pearl Harbor anniversary

Across the country, American and state flags will be flown Saturday at
half-staff to mark the 83-year anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Hobbs has also proclaimed Dec. 7 as Arizona Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

A resolution approved by Congress in 1994 designates December
7 of each year as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day,” and directs
that flags be lowered to half-staff from from sunrise to sundown.

Pearl Harbor Survivor license plates have been issued by Arizona’s Motor Vehicle Division since 1991. The special plates are available to people who were on station as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on Dec. 7, 1941, and were on the island of Oahu or offshore within three miles during the attack. The plate may also be issued to the spouse, parent, child, brother or sister of an eligible person. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, 19 Pearl Harbor plates are currently active in the state today.

Individuals, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
