Gov. Hobbs addresses Arizona’s border security

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs held a news conference on Nov. 18 at the Nogales Port of Entry where she discussed ways to better secure the border. The governor also talked about current efforts to combat the trafficking of drugs.

NOGALES, Ariz. – Governor Katie Hobbs addressed border security in southern Arizona on Monday morning.

During a news conference at the Nogales Port of Entry on Nov. 18, Hobbs discussed ways to better secure the border. The governor also talked about current efforts to combat the trafficking of drugs.

“We worked really hard to build the partnerships we have with our local and state agencies and federal agencies, and as you heard here today, those partnerships are producing results,” Gov. Hobbs said. “What we are doing here is a model for other border states, and we’ll talk to the incoming administration about the success we’ve had and hopes to continue the success we’ve had.”

Republican leaders are calling Hobbs’ border visit too little, too late.

“We’ve tried everything we can to pass laws to enforce the federal laws that are not being enforced. Well, now they’re saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to enforce the federal laws.’ So it’s, you know, she’s kind of irrelevant in a way. And quite frankly, the bill, the proposition we just passed off the ballot, in a way, is irrelevant because President Trump, the federal government, is actually going to enforce the law,” Arizona State Senate President Warren Peterson said.

Proposition 314, also known as the “Secure the Border Act,” was passed by voters in the general election. The measure allows local police to arrest migrants suspected of illegally entering Arizona from Mexico.
