As the sun rises on the new school year, the doors of Alta Vista High School have opened to welcome back students for what promises to be another exceptional educational journey.
Serving the Tucson community since fall of 2003, Alta Vista High School, part of The Leona Group school district, has consistently earned an A-rating for its dedication to academic excellence and community service. The school is committed to preparing students for diverse post-secondary pathways, including college, vocational training, military service or entry into a competitive workforce.
The energy at Alta Vista is palpable as Principal Alicia Alvarez and her team of passionate instructors and staff welcome back their students. Alvarez, a longtime advocate for student achievement and empowerment, emphasizes the school’s relentless support and mentoring as key factors in its success.
“We’re so happy to see our amazing students for the start of another exceptional year at Alta Vista,” Alvarez said.
Students at Alta Vista are provided with numerous opportunities to excel and grow. They can earn college credits through a partnership with Pima Community College, gaining a head start on their higher education goals. Also with Pima, Alta Vista was awarded a TRIO Upward Bound grant which focuses on math and science instruction. Twenty-five AVHS students are enrolled in this program.
Pima Community mentors report to the Alta Vista campus each week, and the school offers both dual enrollment courses and classes students can take at the college. Alta Vista also has approximately 25 students enrolled in the Pima Joint Technical Education District, which offers more than 30 vocational career programs for high school students, including aviation, culinary arts, fire science, medical assisting, and many more disciplines.
Alta Vista also continues its partnership with the University of Arizona, including its ongoing collaboration with the UA’s MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program. As part of this effort, Alta Vista has placed second in the state of Arizona, two years in a row, while competing with traditional and charter high schools. Additionally, the school’s vibrant arts courses allow students to explore and develop their many creative talents.
Alta Vista’s commitment to fostering a well-rounded education is reflected in its array of programs designed to support students’ diverse interests and ambitions. Whether aiming for college, vocational training or the workforce, students receive the guidance and resources necessary to succeed.
As the Alta Vista Lobos start the new school year, the sense of community and dedication to student achievement remains as strong as ever.
