TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Former President Jimmy Carter is about to hit a big milestone. His 100th birthday is on October 1st.
The former president’s long history with Habitat for Humanity brought the community together on Saturday to honor and celebrate his lifetime of service.
The 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, spent years rolling up his sleeves and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit that builds and repairs homes for people in need.
So what better way to celebrate the former president’s 100th birthday than to continue what he dedicated so many years of his life to?
“Habitat for Humanity Tucson is extremely proud to celebrate President Jimmy Carter today. We’re celebrating his legacy of service and his 100th birthday. As a distinguished humanitarian it doesn’t get much more American than President Jimmy Carter and home,” said Don Davis with Habitat for Humanity Tucson.
Tucson volunteers gathered for this celebratory home build Saturday morning raising the walls of three new homes. It’s hard work and community support like this that makes the non-profit thrive and creates the potential to benefit so many, like Desirae Flores, a new Habitat for Humanity homeowner.
“Stability is important to me because I did not have that at all growing up,” said Desirae Flores. “I want nothing more than to show my kids that they’re worthy of owning. I want them to know that they can have whatever they want, even if we have to build it with our own hands, it’s going to be ours.”
“This really is the currency that we exchange of generosity in our community. Where we partner alongside people that care. They come together for a really powerful mission and build homes, community and hope,” said Habitat for Humanity Tucson CEO, Charlie Buchanan.
“There’s nothing more important than a forever home for my kids. I’m just so excited and so are they,” said Flores.
